Greenwich Garden Writers' Retreat for Women
with Valerie Ann Leff
September 9th and 10th
9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Jumpstart your writing this autumn with a two-day retreat for women in a private, ten-acre garden in Greenwich backcountry. Writers of all levels, working in any genre, are welcome.
This retreat will be an entirely generative experience based upon the Amherst Writers & Artists Method developed by Pat Schneider. I will give exercises – or prompts – to spark your creativity, and you may find an inspiring spot to write in for a structured period of time. We will then circle up and be invited to read our words aloud. As a group, we will respond truthfully and respectfully to the new work, pointing out what is strong, artful, memorable, funny, moving, brave. No one will ever be put on the spot or put down. I will use participants’ writing to demonstrate positive examples of serious writing craft. In this way, we will avoid all negative criticism and learn to improve our own writing by recognizing and emulating one another's strengths.
Creative writing is always an adventure of the soul, whether we are wrestling with the sacred or the profane. We generate storylines, poetic images, characters, and phrases – they waltz onto our pages as if from nowhere. Or, we think we are writing about something familiar, and then our writing takes a turn toward the unknown, it deepens, or we see and experience what we thought of as our material in a startling new way. If we are open to the journey and allow ourselves to follow these invitations of the subconscious rather than attempt to lead, we will surprise ourselves by stumbling into some of our most powerful writing.
Note: the Greenwich Garden Retreat will be held rain or shine at the home of poet, artist and designer, Robin Rapoport. There is a large studio space on the property in case of showers. The location is within one mile of exit 29 on the Merritt Parkway – an exact address and directions will be emailed to registrants. While physical fitness is not necessary for this workshop, participants do need to be able to walk over lawns and bring and carry a light folding chair to circle up in different areas on the grounds. Lunch, including a vegetarian option, will be provided; please contact our office several days ahead of time if you have special dietary needs, and we will do what we can to accommodate you.
