The Westport Writers’ Workshop, while recognizing the critical importance of our first responders, condemns the brutality that took the life of George Floyd. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family and to all individuals who have suffered injustice. We wish our community, staff and students, and your extended friends and family the fortitude to not only face the virus of systemic racism, but to work towards affecting change.
Whether we peacefully protest, write to our politicians, or simply teach our children to treat everyone with respect, we are united against systemic racism and reminded again to honor human dignity regardless of race, gender, economic status, sexual orientation, and religious beliefs.
The Westport Writers’ Workshop will continue to strive to be a safe place for all writers to process their feelings and fears, and write towards truth. We want to be an active part of positive change and growth. With that in mind we are committed to ensuring that our programming reflects the diversity of our community. We work everyday to fulfill our mission by offering free service writing workshops to underserved writers in all communities. We have been given an extraordinary opportunity to be more aware of our role in ending systemic racism, and we join with all of you towards that end.
