In this one-day workshop we’ll explore the vibrant and flexible world of contemporary poetry as a means of expressing memories, experiences, impressions, emotions and insights you may have been struggling to convey in prose. Though the focus will be on poetry, we’ll also consider ways to employ the tools and craft of poetry in other forms.
We will spend some time reading classic and contemporary poetry and exploring form poetry, free verse and prose poems, but the main focus of this workshop will be on generating work from a variety of prompts, from the verbal to the visual to the tactile, with an emphasis on the imagery and elevated language that distinguishes poetry from other genres.
By the end of the day, you will come away with a trove of material that you will be able to craft into form poetry or verse if you choose, or employ within prose projects in ways that can elevate and heighten key aspects of your memoir, essay or fiction projects.
