Stephen Vincent Benét defined a short story as something that can be read in an hour and remembered for a lifetime. In this five-week manuscript workshop we will closely read and discuss a draft of one participant’s complete story each week, concentrating on such topics as plot, character, dialogue, and point of view. We will also read classic short stories and explore the varied techniques their authors have employed. So, if you are up to the challenge posed by Isabelle Allende — “Short stories are more difficult [than novels]; they have to be perfect, complete in themselves” — then join us for this wild five-week ride.
Manuscript Course: Each workshop participant will have the opportunity to submit one draft of a complete short story over the course of the 5-week term. Each session will be devoted to discussion of that one story, as well as a published story chosen by the instructor.
