Flash fictions are no different than regular short stories or even novels. They’re just shorter – and therefore fit more easily into our crowded lives. The bulk of our class time will be devoted to the students’ own writing. We’ll concentrate on a variety of topics – plot, characterization, setting, narrative point of view, diction, voice, etc. What we talk about really depends on the stories that students bring to the table. Each week, students will submit a flash fiction for class discussion. We’ll read them together and talk about what’s working well, and we’ll suggest strategies for revision. Depending on student needs, we may end trying some in-class exercises as well. For our purposes, we’ll define a flash fiction as approximately 500 words (about 2 double-spaced pages). Come join us and share your work! All levels are welcome!
