The meals we consume—alone or with others, at home or far afield —do much more than just satisfy our appetites. They also connect us to some of our most deeply-felt personal experiences: memory, family, sense of place, culture. Like Proust’s madeleine, the flavors, aromas, and preparations of certain foods have a unique power to bring these associations to immediate and vivid life.
In this non-fiction course we’ll explore these personal associations with food through a variety of writing styles, including personal essays, features/reportage, and critical reviews. We’ll read and discuss examples of food writing by some of the masters of the form, do fun in-class writing exercises, and work on longer writing assignments to workshop together (and perhaps share with a wider audience.) It should be a delicious experience!
