Read the acknowledgements of your favorite books and you’ll see that most writers have sizable networks of peers weighing in on their manuscripts and, more generally, pulling for them. In my class, I seek to create this same sort of nurturing and collaborative atmosphere. Each week, you’ll share a brief excerpt of up to five double-spaced pages from an ongoing project–a novel or short story–and I’ll lead a constructive discussion of the manuscript, highlighting its positive aspects and suggesting ways to improve it. If time allows, there may also be general discussions of craft and perhaps some in-class writing.
