Everyone has a story. Whether your life is outrageously eccentric or relatively conventional, there’s bound to be something captivating about it, and you are reading this because, as Anne Lamott writes: “You are lucky to be one of those people who wishes to build sand castles with words.”
Contemporary memoir is regular people telling true stories with the finesse of fiction. This class is for beginner writers who want to explore how to tell their stories.
The first part of each class will be a discussion of an aspect of craft—narration, voice, metaphor, scene, dialogue, imagining, and revision—as well as a short in-class writing prompt.
The second part of each class, students may share up to three pages of double-spaced writing for supportive feedback.
