Magical Realism — Writing the Unreal:
Magical Realism, Surrealism, and Fabulism

with Liz Matthews

Are you ready to try a different approach to writing? Magical realism is a style of fiction that paints a realistic view of the modern world while adding magical elements.  It can take the form of fables, myths, and allegory.  Magical realist stories offer writers alternate – often deeper – ways to access the emotional and psychological lives of their characters.  Magical realism has been defined as “what happens when a highly detailed, realistic setting is invaded by something too strange to believe.”

If you have primarily written realistic fiction and feel stuck or want to play – this workshop is for you!

We’ll look at a range of authors and their stories, including Aimee Bender, Kelly Link, George Saunders, Jorge Luis Borges, and Donald Barthelme.  This workshop will also include writing prompts designed to get you to take risks and experiment with various forms.

Come with an open mind and be ready to walk away with another tool to add to your writing craft tool-box.
