For as long as people have been telling stories, they’ve cherished tales about journeys. That’s because travel—whether it brings us to faraway locales, or to nearby places that we’re experiencing anew—has a unique power to edify and enlighten. As well as allowing us to learn about other destinations and cultures, it often teaches us meaningful truths about ourselves.
In this non-fiction course we’ll explore this rich literary tradition through a variety of writing styles, including personal essays, reported features, and service-oriented articles (like blog-friendly round-ups and reviews of hotels and restaurants). We’ll read and discuss examples of travel writing by some of the masters of the form, do fun in-class writing exercises, and work on longer writing assignments to workshop together (and perhaps share with a wider audience.) A great adventure awaits!
