The personal essay examines one piece of a life—an oddity or observation, a habit or hatred, a relationship or loss—through the author’s unique point of view. Great essayists situate personal topics within a broader context; they expose their humanness and, in doing so, connect to the humanness of us all.
In this course, we’ll read and discuss a variety of personal essays and identify the elements that make them successful. We will mine the raw material of our lives to develop a pool of topics and pursue the ones that show promise. Participants will begin drafts on different themes and in different styles, revise at least one draft to completion, and share in an intimate, supportive setting.
