Picture books — stories that are told with words and illustrations — are lifetime companions. We read them as children, then read them to our children and grandchildren. Irresistible to read and surprisingly difficult to write, picture books never fail to fascinate us.
But what makes a picture book work? What are the magic ingredients? What picture books are being published today and why?
Each week we will read and discuss a picture book (or two) for the sheer joy of the story and with these questions in mind. Be on the lookout for special guest appearances by notable picture book authors picture book authors including Caldecott winner Matthew Cordell and Susan Hood, the author of more than 200 children’s books.
Christine Pakkala is the author of six books for children, including a picture book, Chasing Ricky.
