A Mother's Day Fundraiser with Amanda Parrish Morgan

Recent years have seen a long overdue explosion in writing that engages with motherhood with emotional nuance and the intellectual complexity it deserves. In particular, writing about motherhood offers the opportunity to bring community to what can sometimes feel like an isolating endeavor. In this one-time workshop, we'll read short pieces of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction about motherhood. Students will write to three generative prompts and share that writing with one another in the spirit of the community and togetherness that at its best can nurture mothers and whose absence can leave us feeling isolated and unmoored. We'll also talk about making space for writing--in whatever shape serves each of us best--amidst the demands of motherhood.

Amanda Parrish Morgan is the author of STROLLER (Bloomsbury 2022), of which The New Yorker wrote “the central strength of the book is not comprehensiveness but the way the stroller, and Morgan’s experience of her own strollering years, become an omnidirectional magnet, pulling disparate material into friendly proximity.”

Some of Amanda’s writing has appeared in The Rumpus, LitHub, Guernica, The Millions, n+1, Electric Literature, Carve, The American Scholar, The Ploughshares Blog, JSTOR Daily, The Washington Post, Real Simple, Women’s Running and ESPNW.
