with Jessica McEntee
Gesture, dialogue, inner monologue, sensory details. We as fiction writers strive to marry these elements into a seamless whole, using them in concert as we move each scene to a peak. In this class, we'll break down what makes great scenes work on a granular level, giving a close read of passages from Douglas Stuart, Donna Tartt, Sally Rooney. Using what we've learned from our reading, we'll apply these lessons to a prompt or even two, which students can aloud read for feedback. Students can polish this work at home, and we'll designate a class or two for bringing in more finished pieces for (kind and encouraging) critique.
