Crafting writing about the experience of living with, loving or losing someone addicted to drugs or alcohol

Addiction is often called a “family disease.” For good reason. The cycle of drug or alcohol abuse impacts the lives of those addicted, as well as the millions of people who love them. How do we – the mothers, fathers, spouses, siblings and friends—who love, live with or have lost someone to addiction, share our stories of the experience. Why would we?

To witness the cycle of addiction and its aftermath is terrifying. How do we write about the altered realities, impossible role reversals, or unimaginable behavior that occurs at all points of the cycle. How do we give voice to one of the few diseases that is often shrouded in shame? How do we add to a conversation that often isn’t being had? Our stories, memoirs, essays, poems, well written and well told, may reach one reader or many, providing insight, perspective, knowledge, connection, and often, hope.

The workshop is focused on the process of writing and shaping our stories, rather than a discussion of any individual experiences. We will learn ways to delve deeper into difficult themes and scenes, and writing techniques to craft work that resonates with readers who may or may not stand in our shoes. Writing lessons will be followed by two short writing practices that hone in on specific techniques we discuss—all within a lively, supportive atmosphere, in spite of Zoom.
