Whether we are wrestling with the sacred or the profane, creative writing is always an adventure of the soul. Storylines, poetic images, characters, phrases – they waltz onto our pages as if from nowhere. Or, we think we are writing about something familiar, and then our writing takes a turn toward the unknown, it deepens, or we see and experience what we thought of as our material in a startling new way. If we are open to the journey and allow ourselves to follow these invitations of the subconscious rather than attempt to lead with the directive mind, we will surprise ourselves by stumbling into some of our most powerful writing.
This class will be an entirely generative workshop based upon the Amherst Writers & Artists Method developed by Pat Schneider. I will give exercises – or prompts – to spark your creativity, and we will write in class each week. We will be invited to read aloud and respond truthfully and respectfully to the new work, pointing out what is strong, artful, memorable, funny, moving, brave. No one will ever be put on the spot or put down. I will use participants’ writing to demonstrate positive examples of serious writing craft. In this way, we will avoid all negative criticism and learn to improve our own writing by recognizing and emulating one another’s strengths.
