Using Voice in Memoir: Voice of Innocence /Voice of Experience – S204S19

with Ellyn Gelman

Complicated truths in memoir are both excavated and illuminated through voice.  The voice of innocence informs the reader: “Hey listen, this is what happened to me.”  The voice of experience then examines, explores and provides the insight:  “And this is what it might mean to me and to you, too.”  This seminar will explore the works of writers who gain access to these two voices in the same piece of writing. Participants will engage in writing exercises designed to help cultivate their own voices of innocence and experience.
