Stephen Vincent Benét defined a short story as something that can be read in an hour and remembered for a lifetime. In this four-week workshop we will take your story idea through the rough draft and revision process and, with hard work and perhaps a bit of luck, emerge with a memorable finished story. (For those who wonder why it would take four weeks to complete a short story, it is wise to remember the philosopher Pascal’s famous line, “I have made this letter longer than usual because I have not had time to make it shorter.”) Along the way, we will read several well-regarded stories and explore the varied techniques the authors have employed. So, if you are up to the challenge posed by Isabelle Allende—“Short stories are more difficult [than novels]; they have to be perfect, complete in themselves”—then join us for this wild four-week ride.
