A true piece of writing is a dangerous thing, it can change your life.” – Tobias Wolff
This class, geared toward advanced essay writers who have studied memoir and/or essay writing for two plus years. We will learn how to distill personal experiences into publishable essays. Our focus is on making good essays great, using dialogue, detail, theme, and form, as well as developing each student’s unique writing style and voice. You will be encouraged to write the “hard parts” and explore new topics and forms.
Each week we will discuss student work in a supportive, creative atmosphere with the goal of elevating the writing, while also sharpening editing and critiquing skills. We will also discuss targeted publishing options with weekly roundups of contests and calls for submissions for personal essays.
