While the experience of caring for children is rich in inspiration for writing – either directly or indirectly – the logistical demands of parenting can make creativity and motherhood feel incompatible. In this one-day workshop, we’ll read poetry, essays and short stories from a variety of women writing not in spite of motherhood but because of it. We’ll talk about how these pieces, despite variety in style, tone, and form, have been influenced by the experience of motherhood. Students will have the chance to share from the writing we’ll do during the seminar and we’ll also spend some time talking about the logistics of writing from motherhood including considerations in writing about one’s children, how to carve out time for writing.
