with Suzanne Farrell Smith

Craft is essential. When we make something with words, we must craft it thoughtfully, the way we craft any piece of art. Craft shows readers we care about how we write, and makes readers want to read our work. In Nonfiction Craft, we read examples of strong craft and discuss why the pieces succeed. Then we turn to our own work and incorporate the craft element of the week. Craft elements include: beginnings; character and setting; scene and dialogue; sensory details; figurative language and the imagery it evokes; compression; endings.

In this class you can expect:

·      Fundamental information about the craft elements of the week

·      Discussion about mentor texts that exemplify those craft elements

·      Time to write and revise

·      Time to share work in a warm, supportive environment
